During the pre-colonial era, British officials were not involved in checking the powers of chiefs. Instead, checks on the powers of chiefs typically came from traditional institutions such as Kingsmakers, the Council of Elders and Age grades, which played roles in advising, supporting or challenging the authority of the chiefs within their societies.
