Solution:

Expansion simply means multiply each of the terms outside the bracket by each of the terms inside the bracket.

\;3 a(a-4 b)=3 a \times a-3 a \times 4 b

\;3 a(a-4 b)=3 a^2-12 a b

Note: Every number is raised to the power 1 but it is not written.

Law of multiplication of indices

\;a^m \times a^n=a^{m+m}

\;a \times a=a^1 \times a^1

\;a \times a=a^{1+1}

\;a \times a=a^2

\;3 \times 4=12
